Creating a regional Quantum Technology Innovation Hub is the key aim for the recently-launched Centre for Innovation in Advanced Measurement in Manufacturing (CIAMM) project.

The project, launched in autumn 2018, is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with support from the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP). CIAMM aims to give local small to medium enterprises (SMEs) the unique opportunity to exploit the potential of quantum technologies and world-class expertise offered by the University of Birmingham to create new products and services on a platform fit for the future, enabling the growth of local businesses, and also driving innovation into the local economy.

Implementing quantum science into ‘new to firm’ technologies and products means these SMEs are equipped to lead in local and national innovation and growth. It also means their products will boast sensitivity and accuracy currently unparalleled in the industry marketplace.

The Centre will support local businesses in the development of scientific instruments specifically focussed on solutions in medical imaging, civil and mechanical engineering and satellite technology applications. University of Birmingham experts will guide businesses through the very beginnings of product purpose and development to end-user implementation.

Speaking about CIAMM, Professor Kai Bongs, Director of the UK National Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Metrology, said: “The Centre will ensure that the extensive collective knowledge and expertise arising from the University of Birmingham will help to drive investment in the local economy.

“It means that in the future, these businesses will lead on innovative technology, as they have benefitted greatly from using the expertise and opportunities offered by our new Centre.”
