Public engagement

In June 2018, the EPSRC commissioned a report (using Kantar Media) to better understand how the public views and feels about the quantum technologies currently being developed by researchers, and about the potential impact of these technologies.

The report sought public opinion on the different quantum application areas as well as their values, dilemmas, priorities and concerns.

The key findings concluded that the major of the public were engaged and excited by the range of potential benefits associated with quantum technologies, especially once they understood how the technologies could impact upon everyday lives.

As a result, the National Quantum Technologies Programme partners decided to participate in a number of public engagement events throughout the year, to help spread the word about the development and overall impact of quantum technologies.

Quantum Technologies Public Dialogue Report

“EPSRC has a strong commitment to responsible research and innovation and we were conscious that Quantum Technologies are still quite new to the wider world. We therefore thought that it would be appropriate to gauge how people felt about the potential impacts of new systems, devices and products involving quantum principles. We are very grateful to all the participants both from the public and stakeholder groups as well as the academics who took the time to help explain their work and inform the process.” EPSRC’s Executive Chair, Professor Philip Nelson
